Do It Yourself Thermostat Installation

Looking for a “do-it-yourself” project that can save you money on your energy bills? Consider upgrading your thermostat to a digital programmable unit, and save even more by getting the job done on your own. This project does require a bit more skill that your average “do-it-yourselfer” may not have, so always keep a pro in mind in case you need some help. But, I have got a few tips that could simplify the process and save you hundreds of dollars in additional costs.

Read the Instructions

First and foremost read the instructions that come with the new thermostat. If the instructions seem too difficult for you to follow, you can write down each step in language that you can under stand. It would be like translating from tech terms to your language. It may sound silly, but it does help you to understand what you’re doing a little better. If the directions are beyond your comprehension or if you already feel overwhelmed or confused, stop and call a professional before going any further! The last thing you want to do is destroy your new thermostat before you ever get to take advantage of its many benefits.

Turn Off the Furnace

The instructions may not say this, but you always need to turn off the power to your furnace before doing any thing else. This is where I’m going to save you money. Failure to kill the power may cause you to kill you’re control board (mini computer that controls the furnace), the low voltage transformer, or even the new thermostat you’re trying to install.  Imagine that, flipping a switch can save you hundreds of dollars. Don’t forget this simple step or you will be kicking you’re self in the butt for making a simple, but costly, error.

Do-it-Yourselfers that Don’t Save Money!

Every day people try to save money by doing jobs around the home on their own, and luckily many are very successful. However, the ones that aren’t successful are usually the ones they don’t read or don’t understand the directions that come will their thermostat. Most of the time the people that can’t figure it out spend way too much time and money on a project than they would have if they had called someone come out to do it in the first place. If you have problems STOP and call for help. There is no shame having a professional do the job for you. The most important thing is getting the job done right whether you do it yourself or you call a pro.
